The collected Edmonton spelling mistakes, plate No. 347:

Chinese Superstore sign, September 16, 2003
I’m realizing my impressions of this town are more informed by my recent 5 years in Europe than by the preceding 20 years in Vancouver and its environs. It’s not the Alberta/BC differences, it’s just living in Canada I can’t get used to. One thing I’m noticing, on-campus and off, are typos and spelling and grammatical mistakes (most from native English speakers).
Cruising the heck out of the Supertore for the makings of a Ma Por tofu, I recently picked up the following heretofore unfamiliar ingredients (bless them in their fermented glory):
- preserved tofu (learn about it at The Cook’s Thesaurus or see a photo)
- chile bean sauce (learn about it at The Cook’s Thesaurus or see a photo)
Next: the mystery crunchy strings in a hot and sour soup, which I’m told are shredded black fungus.
More:
- The Essential Wok Cookbook is quite respectable, with great range and scrumptious illustrations. So far everything hits the spot. The Ma Por tofu recipe has a typo, but what’s a teaspoon of soy sauce between friends? Next time I shall stir in all the preserved tofu “until fragrant” before adding the actually firm, fresh tofu
- I caught a glimpse of The Essential Asian Cookbook at the bookstore, and wanted it. (Soon, soon, my pretty.) Apparently there’s a whole series: Mediterranean, baking, pasta, desserts, appetizers, vegetarian, seafood, vegan, barbecue, Christmas, etc.
