From Erica Jong to Blue in the Face to Sex in the City, an idealized New York City has beckoned to me with sharp allure. I haven’t properly been there, having perhaps breezed through once on a Greyhound as a kid. Whereas I have tasted a few of the delights of Paris, London and Amsterdam more recently.

But NYC calls and calls, as I sit in my Indo-European cafe in Edmonton, spending the whole afternoon reading The New York Times (chock-full of references to Canada, Jews and gays; brimming with full-colour supermodels peddling high-fashion goods).
