Canadian unity Christmas 21 December 2004, 23:33

My grade 10 French teacher trotted out this old (fire-roasted) chestnut, with its meld of English and French—less translated than softly, satirically made sensible: T’was the Night d’avant Noël by Clement C. Moore and Léonce Gallant.

T’was the night before Christmas et dans tout le logis
Not a creature was stirring, même pas une souris.
The stockings were hung le long d’ la cheminée
In hopes that St Nicholas ne va pas oublier.

For the class potluck, I baked a bûche de Noël decorated with marzipan elves.
