Ergonomics

Mischiff has been calling our attention to some stuff lately, so I’m commenting on blogs for a change.
I have mused and mused upon what it is to write on the web, and seen my site updates stretch across the weeks until they are very thin indeed. What gives?
Easy as web writing software makes it, we still have to take the trouble to login and put our thoughts to keyboard. So it’s gotta be worth it. I’ve seen LiveJournals that chronicle only twinges of pain and moments of angst, authors finding no other impetus than the desire to vent or rant.
I decided Beetroot wouldn’t be like that. I’ve killed so many entries that were motivated by the cynical, nasty-humoured impulse to point out how shitty or stupid something is. One of the reasons is that I don’t want to attract (or mold you fine people into) that sort of audience.
On the other hand, I’ve killed many preachy-preachy entries because I would also like to keep my few readers. :)
(On another tack, in some ways I’m also carefully writing Beetroot for the unanticipated audience: exes, co-workers, family members, detractors, people who came here from Google.)
Even comment spam from MSN lamers can lend perspective. If I’ve pissed “Skye” off, I figure all’s right with the world.
So what have we got? I’ve got to seek out another impetus to write. So far this includes gathering up clever dictionaries.
Hey, I even link to a guy who blogs to confess whenever he does something dumb. (A master of self-effacing irony, Joelogon’s is the original antithesis of the “Wha-ha-hoa, look how cool I am!” personal homepage.)

Screw the audience. Write for you; if that means being Preachy McPreachfordson, or ranting, then so be it. Likely, your style of wit (which is why we're all here, after all) is going to shine through regardless.— Darren James Harkness · 1405 days ago · #

a) You've gotta work at wit b) y'all are here for 10% pith and 90% polish c) and I don't think there's a more far-reaching, public medium. The burden of civilization is upon us, as they said in the movie Night of the Comet.— Pam · 1395 days ago · #
