Blissfully domestic concerns may colonize this space.
THE RECIPE
Prawns Steamed in Banana Leaves
THE SIDEBAR
[Banana leaves] are available from Asian food stores and specialty fruit and vegetable shops. Alternatively, you may have a friend with a banana tree.
I think it was Wil Ferguson that said Australia had finally realized it was part of Asia. Accordingly, the great, Aussie Essential Wok Cookbook occasionally comes up with gems like this to let us know we’re not in Kansas anymore. It certainly makes March feel colder in Edmonton. Another tribute to Australia’s Asian sensibility follows.
THE RECIPE
Chinese Chicken and Corn Soup
THE QUAINTLY TELLTALE INGREDIENT
Canned creamed corn
THE FOOTNOOTE
This isn’t an authentic Chinese recipe. It was invented by homesick Chinese Americans.
What a charming distinction. Anyone care to dispute this claim? I do wonder what this recipe is intended to approximate.
FACTOIDS
- Back in the day, my brother told me the way to have this soup is with white pepper shaken on top.
- My theory about creamed corn is that it’s a Southern-US-expat stand-in for grits.
FROM MY WOK
(We had this again tonight, but I was trying to be too cool to run around snapping photos of it, along with its companion dish: Braised Bok Choy.)

I want to cry, that looks so good, can I cry? The most exotic that our food gets these days is when it's something that the kid won't eat. And that's anything that's not meat/potatoes/normal vegetables (brocc/cauli/carrot).— Oorgo · 885 days ago · #
