1. Strike one, Joy of Cooking. The lesson: Don’t add too much starter when you’re making yogurt. But is using the capital-L word Lebensraum in a recipe really uber-PC?
The bacillus, if crowded, gives a sour, watery product. But if the culture has sufficient Lebensraum, it will be rich, mild and creamy.

UPDATE: German capitalization aside, this may be a legitimate usage (cf. Wikipedia), but the connotation is playfully unfortunate. Could we please just wait another 50 years before re-adopting terms that were appropriated by the Nazis?

2. Jerome photographs Lyon and his beloved Dombes, but he also travels. Nobody who posted comments to his Omaha Beach photo (captioned Souvenir) seemed to know the significance of the place (WW2, Normandy landing), so he added an explanation that the photo depicts the remains of the German defenses. No, they aren’t rocks.
