Those of you who know me, know that Vancouver is my old home town, then I lived in the Netherlands for four and a half years (and France for one year) before moving to Edmonton.
When the plane lands in Vancouver, a few of the Edmontonians that fill the plane always remark to one another how green the grass is. No matter the season. Yeah guys, “the grass is always greener” alright.
A couple of photos of Holland on two-muses show this green grass for all seasons. I mainly remember spring lambs gamboling the verdant velvet, between mirrory ditches reflecting pale sky. Surprisingly long tails wagging wildly. “Two shakes of a lamb’s tail” is a very short time indeed!
I can’t help but think there’s an ideal climate for lawns, and that’s a stable, cool and wet one like that of England, Holland or Vancouver. We’re lucky when snow and ice cover Edmonton’s lawns, otherwise it looks a gritty brown mess up to six months of the year.
I’m kind of against lawns anyway. As traditional landscaping, they’re somewhat ridiculous for North America. I’m glad our landscaped yard doesn’t include one. Who put the “mow” in home-owning?
