Saag paneer 29 May 2007, 23:42

Spinach again. No clever entry this time. It’s the organic veg delivery that’s doing this to us, so for the last month I have begged them not to bring the spinach or onions. Today there isn’t a scrap of lettuce in the house either. I stand ready for whatever is delivered. Bring it ON, Farm Fresh.

I’m assured of getting a healthy diet and some creative stimulation in the kitchen by these deliveries. Very little has been wasted so far.

I slunk to the local Indian convenience store to shamefacedly buy the frozen paneer (cheese). I used the Food Network recipe and improvised by adulterating my Vietnamese-labelled Madras curry powder.* I guess my notes are in the kitchen, but I recall that it contains anise and it was not worth buying a huge package of fennel. I still have the mango powder for the chana masala.

Wok. The results were really quite good, yet I can’t remember whether that we gave any some to our 16 month old kid. My rice steamer makes really, really good, fluffy basmati rice. Time be damned!

I bought a cheap mortar and pestle from Ikea. Next, whole spices.

*And like a scoundrel substituted oil for ghee! Too cheap to buy store-bought, and too squeamish to fill the house with burnt butter smell.
