The reason salad in a bag is so over 12 May 2009, 11:12

Hi folks and foodies!

My expanding family does not really consist of more than two lettuce eaters, but we’ve kicked the $4 salad in a bag habit with this easy trick:

Buy a $2 head of leaf lettuce.

It turns out that liquid lettuce can be avoided! It’s true! Fridge lettuce seems to love it when you take one or two outer leaves off each day to make a quick salad at lunch. We have a green salad every day either lunching at home together, or with dinner. Yes, we’re disgusting.

I wouldn’t eat vegetables hardly at all if it weren’t for the mister’s salt and fresh-ground pepper vinaigrettes. Mostly balsamico, but sometimes red or white wine vinegars, and olive oil or a touch of walnut oil (the first four all have their places on our countertop, while the latter sits in the door of the fridge). We know no bottled salad dressings.

I hate washing lettuce as much as the next guy, but I love just one leaf in my honest cheese and mayo sandwich. Sometimes I do pine for just a hint of radicchio. But I don’t miss the black slime that sneaks into the bags of baby greens, or that funny plastic taste.

Turn over a new leaf today!
