I don’t think I’ve ever lived in a house on a street within a grid system. Out the back window the neighbours across the alley seem so close. We’re surrounded by houses. We’ve traded the view from a Saskatchewan Drive high-rise for interior space.

Our last place was a flat in a Dutch canal house, then previously a flat in a French six-storey building. Any other houses have been those of my parents, on country streets.
